High Frequency PCB Design & Manufacturing

At Mer-Mar Electronics, we are known to be at the forefront of adopting the latest technologies and offering the most cutting-edge PCBs. Little surprise then that high frequency PCB design and manufacturing are an important aspect of our portfolio. With our state-of-the-art equipment and expert high frequency PCB manufacturer team, you can rest assured that we are well poised to meet the evolving requirements of our consumers.

Characteristics of High Frequency PCB

A high-frequency PCB is known for its quick signal flow rates as also its frequency range of up to 100 GHz. Some of the characteristics of High Frequency PCBs include:

1. Low Dissipation Factor

The dissipation factor of High Frequency PCBs is typically between 0.0019 and 0.025. This means that the signal transmission rate isn’t impacted, and that signal transmission loss is minimized.

2. Low Dielectric Constant

Once again on account of a low dielectric constant there is less signal delay as also higher rate of frequency emission.

3. Chemical Resistance

High Frequency PCBs are known for their high chemical resistance. This makes them less susceptible to corrosion.

4. Low Moisture Absorption

With their low moisture absorption such boards are ideally suited for use in humid environments.

5. Low Levels of Thermal Expansion

With low dimensional stability, such PCBs are suited to be used in environments with high temperatures.

With complex electronic components requiring quick signal rates and high transmission frequencies, the use of such boards has become ubiquitous.

Some of the other advantages of high frequency circuit boards offer, include:

  • They enable designers to achieve improved signals, high functional density in a small size and at reduced costs.
  • They are also provided with ground planes and help reduce emissions of electromagnetic waves and maintain signal quality.

At Mer-Mar Electronics, we ensure that we follow the best practices whereby crosstalk and skin effect are avoided. To do this, the distance between the plane and the trace layer is minimized. It is also ensured that the length and the trace width of the board is selected in a manner that the board isn’t heated at high frequencies.

Why we are a one-stop-shop for
high-frequency PCB requirements?

High Frequency PCB Manufacturing Process

The process of fabrication of High Frequency Circuit Boards, involves the following steps:

1. Make a PCB design

In making the design it is important that aspects such as the voltage and power demands are ascertained. It is also important to check if different signals can be accommodated.

Inability to look at these aspects can ruin the device’s performance and cause it to fail its validation tests. Some of the design aspects that need attention include:

  • Layout parameters
  • Board layer stackup
  • Controlled impedance
  • PCB pad stacks and footprints

Some design rules that need to be followed for high frequency PCBs include:

  • Follow minimum spacing rules
  • Trace routing
  • Power and ground planes

The next step would be to understand the specific constraints and accordingly choose the material for your circuit board.

2. Print copper for the inner layers

After printing the PCB on the laminate, copper is pre-bonded on the laminate that serves as the PCB structure.

3. Layers alignment

For a multilayered PCB, it is important that the layers be aligned. The holes are used to arrange both the outer and inner PCB layers.

4. PCB layers lamination

This step involves laminating the PCB. A metal clamp is useful in joining the layers.

5. Drilling

Next comes the process of drilling in order to secure the circuit board. Once the process of drilling is complete, the next step involves filing the excess copper.

6. Plating

Prior to the process of plating, the board is thoroughly cleaned. The chemicals applied post that help in plating the PCB

7. Solder masking

An epoxy ink and solder film are next applied to the PCB.

8. Screening and silk screen

The plating process comes next where the PCB is plated with HASL, silver or gold. Post plating a silkscreen is applied.

9. Testing

This is an extremely important step where robust testing mechanisms are applied to ensure the efficacy of the PCBs.
